Here’s your chance to be part of a Guinness World Record attempt and help the local food bank at the same time. Sodexho Food Services and Franciscan University will attempt to break the world record for the amount of canned goods collected for charity in one day. The record currently stands at 156,889.34 pounds. Canned goods will be accepted tomorrow, Wednesday October 18, from 6:00 am to midnight at Heavenly Grounds, the Pub at JC and Antonian Dining Hall. March 25, 2006Dr. David Dalin, rabbi and author of The Myth of Hitler’s Pope, will speak on Sunday, March 26, at 8:00 pm in the International Lounge at the JCWC. Dr. Dalin will speak on “Pius XII: A Defense of His Role with Jews.” Pope Pius XII has been accused of ignoring the plight of European Jews and failing to speak out against Hitler. Dr. Dalin explores the political agenda behind these accusations in his book, The Myth of Hitler’s Pope. He cites the testimony of Holocaust survivors that directly contradict these allegations.
There will be a book signing and reception following Dr. Dalin’s talk. The talk is free and open to the public.

Tosca
March 24, 2006The Pittsburgh Opera will present “Tosca” on Tuesday, April 4 at 7:00 pm. Thanks to a subsidy from FUSA, 100 tickets are available at a discount for Franciscan students. These tickets are $10 each and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. After that, tickets are $16 for students and $26 for non-students. Transportation is available, too. The first 55 FUS students will be charged $2; the charge will be $10 for others. The bus will leave the Circle at 5:30. Tickets can be purchased until March 24 from Barb Dray at 244 Egan.
Taming the Lion Within: Five Steps to Anger Management
March 23, 2006Dr. Ronda Chervin will offer a seminar on anger management this Friday and Saturday, March 24-25. The seminar is designed to help overcome uncontrolled or over-reactive anger. Dr. Chervin is a professor of philosophy and spirituality and author of more than 50 books on Catholic living.
The registration fee is $49 and there is an optional meal plan available for $14. A workbook, available at the bookstore for $13.99, is optional. March 23, 2006The widening rift between Europe and America will be the topic of the talk by Dr. Frans Alting von Geausau this Thursday, March 23 at 7:45 pm in Pugliese Auditorium. Dr. von Geausau is a professor of international law and renowned political consultant from the Netherlands. He is the author and editor of many books and articles on the current plight of Europe, including European Unification in the Twentieth Century. He is considered one of Europe’s foremost experts on the collapse of Communism. One of his major areas of study is the moral and ethical implications of international relations.

Conference on Christian Philosophy
March 22, 2006Franciscan University’s MS Philosophy Program will host the annual Conference on Christian Philosophy this Friday and Saturday, March 24-25. The conference will examine Francisco Suarez’s writings on the will of God and natural law, the notion of time, the concept of being, political authority and other topics. Dr. John P. Doyle of St. Louis University and Dr. Jorge J. E. Gracia of the University of Buffalo – SUNY will address the conference.
