Wikipedia

January 31, 2006

It’s handy, it’s quick and it’s usually accurate – usually. But because Wikipedia entries can be changed by any user, for better or worse, it isn’t an authoritative source. In December, an entry falsely accused a former administrative assistant for Robert Kennedy of complicity in his assassination. Later that same week it was disclosed that Adam Curry had edited his own Wiki entry to inflate his contribution to podcasting and to minimize the involvement of other podcasters (Chronicle of Higher Education‘s Wired Campus).

This week it was discovered that congressional staffers are changing Wikipedia entries. Some of the changes are made to enhance the congressman’s bio but other changes are derogatory in nature (via The Lowell Sun). Remember when you’re using Wikipedia to double check any information you find there.

Virus alert – Osama Hanged

January 25, 2006

From the Anchoress:

Passed to me from a very reliable friend, appears there is a new virus out there with an email header purporting to contain pictures of Osama hanging by the neck. The body of the email says Osama is found, and instructs you to open the attachment to view the pics. Do that and munch, munch, munch, your hard drive is a goner.

Just so you know.

Deus Caritas Est

January 25, 2006

The first encyclical letter from Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est, has been published. It begins:

“God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn 4:16). These words from the First Letter of John express with remarkable clarity the heart of the Christian faith: the Christian image of God and the resulting image of mankind and its destiny. In the same verse, Saint John also offers a kind of summary of the Christian life: “We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us”.

It is available online at the Vatican’s web page.
